Donald S. Allen ’32 died December 31, 2012, in Canandaigua, New York. Don came to Dartmouth from Saugus (Massachusetts) High School. At Dartmouth he majored in chemistry and also received an M.A. in organic chemistry in 1934. After graduation he taught science and math at Texas County Day School (now St. Marks School) in Dallas. In 1943 Don earned his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Yale University. He was assistant professor of chemistry at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, before moving on to the State University of New York at New Paltz, where he served as chairman of the division of natural science from 1945 to 1959. Don was the chairman of the chemistry department at the State University of New York at Albany from 1959 to 1968. During that time he spent two years with the IKIP, a teacher training college, in Bandung, Indonesia. Don retired from Eisenhower College in Seneca Falls, New York, as director of the division of science and mathematics in 1977 and was honored by the college as professor emeritus of chemistry the following year. He was also conferred an honorary doctorate by the New York Chiropractic College. Don was active in numerous community organizations, including Rotary Club, and always had time for family and friends. He enjoyed singing and loved to travel, visiting many countries. His wife, Kay, predeceased him in 2002. Don is survived by his daughters Patricia and Barbara.
